what is an airgun
Category: Airgun Basics

Airguns have been around for centuries and have evolved into a popular recreational activity. They are also used for pest control, hunting, and competitive sports. An Airgun is a firearm that uses compressed air or gas to propel a projectile out of the barrel.

The earliest airguns date back to the 16th century when they were primarily used for hunting small game. These guns used a spring piston to compress the air, which would then be released to fire the projectile. Over time, airguns have evolved to become more sophisticated, with new technologies and materials used in their construction.

WHAT IS AN AIRGUN?

Airguns are typically classified based on the power source, with the three most common types being spring piston, pneumatic, and CO2. Spring Piston Airguns are the most common type, and they use a spring-loaded piston to compress the air. Pneumatic Airguns use compressed air, which is stored in a reservoir, and CO2 airguns use a small canister of compressed CO2 gas.

Airguns come in a range of sizes, from small pistols to large rifles, and can shoot a variety of projectiles, including pellets, BBs, and darts. Pellets are the most common projectile used in airguns, and they come in a variety of sizes and shapes, including flathead, pointed, and hollow-point.

One of the advantages of airguns is that they are relatively quiet compared to traditional firearms, making them ideal for use in urban areas where noise pollution can be a concern. They are also less powerful than traditional firearms, making them safer to use, and they are often used for target shooting and plinking.

Airguns have also become popular among hunters and pest control experts, as they can be used to take down small game without the loud noise and recoil of a traditional firearm. This makes them ideal for use in suburban areas where traditional firearms may not be practical.

Overall, airguns are versatile and fun firearms that can be used for a variety of purposes. Whether you are a hunter, target shooter, or just looking for a new hobby, airguns are worth considering.

SPRING POWERED AIRGUNS

A spring-powered airgun, also commonly called a break-barrel airgun, uses a spring piston mechanism to compress air within a chamber. When the trigger is pulled, a spring is released, which drives a piston forward, compressing air in the chamber. The compressed air is then released, propelling the pellet or bullet forward. Unlike other airguns, break-barrel air rifles require the user to cock the gun by breaking the barrel at the hinge point, which compresses the spring and loads the pellet into the breech.

PNEUMATIC, KNOWN AS PCP AIRGUNS

So, what are PCP air rifles? PCP Air Rifles use compressed breathable air as the propellant to fire pellets. For this purpose, the air in the gun’s air tank is compressed to 2700-3000 psi (pounds per square inch) by using a high-pressure hand pump or scuba tank. Once the Airguns tank is filled to the desired pressure level, the airgun is ready for use. The firing sequence of a PCP is really quite simple. When the trigger is pulled, a valve opens, and a quick burst of compressed air is released to travel up the barrel, pushing the pellet in front of it. Each time the gun has fired, the pressure and volume of available air in the gun’s air tank are slightly reduced.
